It seems strange and annoying to me that there are links in /etc/apache to
logging and library directories.  I thought that /etc was just for configuration
files.

Having these links to huge directories outside of /etc makes it impractical to
use "grep -r" to trawl through configuration files to look for some elusive setting.

it allows us to somewhat shorter and easier to work/deal
with apache configuration files.
