Now the rtl8180-sa2400 is out of date, and this is must be merge into portage
No, it really musn't. I am testing this locally, and it locks up more than the rtl8180, and also the connection is so horrible (reporting 97% connection) yet taking almost 10k ms to respond to pings. This definitely needs more work before it goes into portage.
Please don't mark this as developer only as well.
Just an update, as of 2.6.17, I am using cvs, and things seem to have stablized a bit - will be doing some more testing, but this may just have a chance to get into portage now
Just wanted to touch base - been having issues with my wireless at home, and at work, we don't have wireless, so I haven't been able to test recently, but I would say the driver is pretty stable (moments of feeling like a connection dropped, but its stayed, so I will be doing a cvs snapshot ebuild *soon*)
Actually, now, rtl8180 seems to be getting attention again, and rtl818x seems abandoned. I updated the rtl8180 earlier, this still isn't ready
rtl8180 has been updated and if I am not mistaken work on a mac80211 based driver is on the way.

yeah, there is an ebuild for rtl-wifi somewhere here in bugzilla. It might be added to portage some day but more likely it will get into sunrise when someone has the courage to put it there :)
rtl-wifi is bug #172913.
