Steps to reproduce:
1) Format your GENTOO_MIRRORS entry in make.conf to look like:

GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.ccccom.com \
http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ \
ftp://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ \
http://san.csc.calpoly.edu/gentoo/distfiles/"

2) Run mirrorselect (e.g. 'mirrorselect -s3 -b10')

3) Your new make.conf file will have 3 lines like:

http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ \
ftp://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ \
http://san.csc.calpoly.edu/gentoo/distfiles/"

in addition to the new GENTOO_MIRRORS line generated by mirrorselect at the bottom of the file.

Reassigning to the maintainer of mirrorselect so this bug will actually get looked at.

speaking with solar and others, GENTOO_MIRRORS is on one line to ease parsing by our utilities and I really don't think it puts any undue stress upon the user base.
