Description Risto A. Paju 2006-06-04 13:31:26 UTC
I've upgraded two ~x86 systems with the latest X.org packages. My laptop which uses the i810 driver, does not blank the screen properly after "xset dpms 300". It only turns the screen black, but does not turn the backlight off. There is no error reported in the Xorg logfile.

This only happens with the latest 1.6.0 version of the driver, and previous versions work as intended. My desktop with the via driver blanks just fine with the new xorg-server, so I suspect it is a problem in the driver.

Specs and information (lspci, xorg.conf, etc) about my laptop can be found at

http://iki.fi/teknohog/hardware/sigmatrix/

I can confirm this behaviour using up-to-date X.org from portage and i810.
Comment 2 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-05 20:41:52 UTC
I had that issue at first, but a re-load of X or a restart of my laptop made the problem go away. I haven't had any issues since.

What chipsets do both of your have, exactly?

Your CFLAGS make me cringe.

lspci & emerge --info output

So here it comes the output of lspci and emerge --info of my laptop. I hope it will help you and just to be exact and not that fast-handed that I was at my previous post, that's what exactly happens in my case:
'$ xset dpms force off' - the display tuns off completely, even the backlights go out, but after 1 sec the blacklights turn on and the display stays blank...wierd and annoying. The very same thing happens if I use 'suspend' or 'standby' instead of 'off'.

lspci output

Here's my lspci as well.

I confirm the same behaviour that "xset dpms force off" turns the display off for a second, but it comes back on (with black fill) immediately. This also happens after the screensaver time limit.
Comment 5 Risto A. Paju 2006-06-06 14:01:33 UTC
A reboot of the laptop solved the problem :-/ I guess this is now FIXED if nobody else reports it...

I had multiple reboots since the upgrade to the new driver and nothing is solved, so please don't mark this bug as resolved. Tell me what further information do you need, ask me anything, but don't mark the bug resolved as it is not.
Comment 7 Risto A. Paju 2006-06-06 17:00:26 UTC
Reopened as per Gabor Marton's request. Sorry about the confusion :)
Comment 8 Grzegorz {NineX} Krzystek 2006-06-07 08:07:58 UTC
i've this problem too.
dispay turns off , after couple secconds display turns on and stay blank :(
Comment 9 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-11 09:17:24 UTC
Gabor: You should try updating your kernel to the 2.6.16 series. This might be the cause of the problem.

Ok., I'm goning to compile a new kernel tonight and see whether it helps or not.

Any more ideas?

Comment 14 Antti Mäkelä 2006-06-15 02:40:46 UTC
I've noticed that using vbetool for powering off display works ok, but how to integrate that into Xorg's DPMS functionality is another question..
Comment 15 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-17 08:49:07 UTC
This might be a bug in the driver with your specific hardware.

Please find or create a bug at https://bugs.freedesktop.org and post the link here when done. Thanks!

Hi, again!

Sorry, i haven't had the time to play with my laptop so far and so haven't filed a bug at freedesktop.org, but found something new: I noticed that if I don't log in when I get my gdm up and running, my LCD turn off correctly, but not after logging in. So I thought it might be an autostarted application that causes my headache and so I found out that if I quit all my running gkrellm2s, dpms force off works as it meant to work. I'm happy and sad at the same time. I found the sinner, but I don't want get rid of my gkrellm2s and I'am not intended of using gdesklets and other eyecandy stuff and I even don't know if they support monitoring through network, so let's see if google is my friend. ;)

Good night for today!

i was unloaded acpi abttery module from my kernel (thats module making loot of actions in my system) and dpms now workin corectly.
look on freedesktop ;)

  Look, where?

Ah, found the bug he was referring to. Setting URL.

Hmm, this has been fixed upstream, but I'm unsure if the fix made it into 7.2. Could someone please note whether 7.2 fixes the problem for them?

Well, the bug is listed as a blocker for #6666, 7.2 release tracker...so I'd guess it's in 7.2.

Yeah, except the bug only mentions the commit to master, which would mean the fix will be in 7.3 unless we include it here manually.
