Description Klaas Decanniere 2006-05-29 11:13:46 UTC
Starting ooffice2, choosing file-open menu gives

- error message box "could not find mime type application/octet-stream"
clicked ok
- error message box "No mime types installed"
clicked ok
- error message box "Malformed URL file:///usr/lib/openoffice/program"
- error message box "Malformed URL file:///usr2/klaas"
- open file box appears

(according to the task bar, the last 3 windows belong to Kdefilepicker)

In the open file window, files are not listed in the normal way (there is nothing to click on).
typing in the file name makes the filepicker thingy hang.

If you load the file using the "ooffice2 filename" way, the file can be opened but not saved - saving gives similar problems (same error boxes about mime types), and then freezes kde.
Switching to a console and killing the openoffice processes "unblocks" kde.

same problem exists on my laptop.
using the kde control center file association, I verified that application/octet-stream exists. Also /usr/kde/3.4/share/mimelnk/application/octet-stream.desktop exists.
(~/.mime.types exists on my desktop but not on my laptop)

You could try to change the interface language and see if that helps. Also: Does using the original file selector (there is a checkbox for this in Preferences > General) work fine?

And does this only happen in OpenOffice.org or do you have similar problems in other KDE-applications?

Using the original file selector works (both load and save) - I haven't touched the interface language yet.
As for other KDE applications: I don't use that many. Korganzer is saving my shedule without problems(that 's version 3.5.2, on the laptop)
Any other KDE program I can try?

Anything that uses a file selector ;) Actually I'm no KDE-user myself, so...

btw: why are you using kde-integration, if you are not using kde?

I wasn't really aware that I was using kde-integration.
Must have sneaked in somewhere on its own (kde is not in my make.conf USE, but it shows up in the emerge --info use flags)
I use KDE as desktop (I had to pick one, and it is standard at work).
I'm upgrading to kde 3.5.1 at the moment. Maybe that will help.

I'm running kde 3.5.2 (kdelibs 3.5.2-r6, kdebase 3.5.2-r1) now with openoffice 2.0.2, and so far all is well.
Must have been a weird combination of kde bits. I had the problem on two machines, so I don't think I was imagining it :-)
Both machines have kde-integration for openoffice on. Seems to be set up automagically this way.

thanks for the help!

Klaas

Must have been some broken KDE-stuff, good to know that it works now, closing this
