I have browsed through the website triyng to find information on the people and the company behind Gentoo and on the history of the distribution, but without success. I have questions like the following on my mind: At the bottom of the webpages there is a copyright notice mentioning a company "Gentoo Technologies, Inc.", which also seems to be the gentoo.org domain owner. Why is there not any detailed information on this company? No contact information like physical address, phone number, etc. can be seen (except for in the WHOIS records). Is the company owned by the same people who got Gentoo started? What is the role of the company? Is the soul purpose of the company to support the distribution, or does it offer any other services or products? As Gentoo is free, how does the company make money? Who started Gentoo, why and when? Presentations/bios/CVs on the core developers/architects and company management would be nice to see. How many people are paid to work on Gentoo? How many volunteers are estimated to be contributing? Gentoo is almost at version 1.4. When were the previous versions released? What major new features did they contain? Some kind of version history would be nice. Is there any roadmap that would list projected timetable and feature list for upcoming releases? In short, what I'm wishing for is that the website would provide a more comprehensive presentation of the forces behind the project as well as present the past accomplishments of the project together with a plan for the future. The webiste is currently too vague and anonymous in these respects. Especially when you are asking for donations. Why should I donate when I don't even know to whom or what kind of people my money will go?
Reassigning to our PR person, Kurt Lieber. Cheers, //zhen
This is something we're actively working on. Some, but not all of your questions will be answered over the next few weeks as we increase the information availableo on the web site.
Whoops. I just discovered http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/devlist.xml , which addresses at least a part of the questions I raised. Thank you for making such a list available. I must have been partly blind when filing the enhancement request as I failed to notice the list of developers although it is in the main navigation menu. The list seems to have been present on the website for quite a while already.
as mentioned by the submitter, the devlist answers some of these questions. As for more in-depth info, the "featured developer" section in the GWN addresses that to some extent. There's also the gentoo social contract (linked off the main site) which explains what gentoo is all about. closing bug.
