I am using gentoo linux 2006.0 with kernel 2.6.16 r8. I have an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor, 2gb ram, and 80gb hd partitioned according to the manual exept with reiserfs. I followed the manual almost exactly using the minimal internel install disk, but when I rebooted after installing grub exactly how the manual says, grub would give error 15: file not found in reference to the kernel. The only way to fix this problem was to deviate from the manual and have the kernel line in grub.conf read "kernel (hd0,0)/linux-2.6.16-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/hda3 vga=0x318 video=vesafb". I did include root (hd0,0) and everything else, but without "(hd0,0)" instead of "/boot" as the manual has it, it can't access the kernel. I am not sure if it is a bug in grub or just the documentation, but one of them sould be changed, if this is found to be a valid bug.

(In reply to comment #1) > This is not a support forum. This doesn't look like a support request to me, considering the original comment mentioned a way to get grub working already.
Eh, sorry I've misread this completely...
This has been added for Bug 108493. Works fine here, /boot or not... Are you missing the symlink in /boot, perhaps? lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 1 2004-07-22 15:28 boot -> .
