The lpadmin group created by the ebuild is in the range of normal users; in my case gid=1013. This will mess up filtering based on numeric gids as used by many programs and scripts. Apparently the lpadmin gid is 106 on an ubuntu, so something similar should be chosen. I haven't been able to find an authoritative list of common system gids for Gentoo either.
In gentoo we assign gid's dynamically. Normal users do not have groups, what do you mean?
Right, I see some info missing: dynamically assigned gid's are *really* impractical in a mixed environment, since a lot of other distros use private groups (basically gid=uid for all normal users). That way things are messed up for cases using gid ranges. I haven't found any docs on how this solution was decided, if it ever was thought through. Any pointers?
What should I do with this bug now? I wonder how you were able to get such a high number. These are the IDs on both of my systems: # grep lpad /etc/group lpadmin:x:446: # grep lpad /etc/group lpadmin:x:455: For documentation - no idea, but you can try to bring it up on the gentoo-dev.list
I have made 106 the default, cannot see any problem with that.
