DRI not longer functions on a 8MB matrox g200 card when upgrading from 2.6.15-r1 kernel to 2.6.16-r3, or -r7. Reverting to a 2.6.15 kernel resolves this issue. Below is my xorg.conf for a 2.6.15-r1 kernel.

Note this states DRI is disabled when x is started up, despite it being enabled in the above xorg.conf. A topic on the forum was raised at http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-461154-highlight-mga.html

Let me know if you need any more information.

Maybe you've been hit by bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4797 in the DRM module of mga.

Did you tried adding the Option "OldDmaInit" "true" in the Device section of xorg.conf for your card as a workaround.

If that solves your problem it is solved in the CVS version of the DRM module.

See bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4797

Xorg log with "OldDmaInit" option set to true

Afraid it doesn't. I've added this option to the xorg.conf and I still get no DRI. Here is the resulting Xorg.log, If you read through it you can see it reads the option, then ignores it (Is it not valid in this xorg version?). DRI remains disabled.

"(==) MGA(0): Direct rendering disabled
(WW) MGA(0): Option "OldDmaInit" is not used"

I noticed there appears to be some problem with the agp initialisation/usage

"(EE) MGA(0): [agp] AGP not available"

Could this have anything to do with it? I'm going to try disabling PCI reties also, just incase this is upsetting things. I'll let you know my results. Xorg log given below.

If there is anything furtehr you need just let me know.

Cheers

I've tried disabling PCIRetry with no effect.

I've used the option "NoAccel" to explicitly enable DRI with no effect.

I've placed the card in AGPx2 mode (it is specified to run at this speed, but the xserver used to crash when a 3d app was run and AGP was set to x2.) The log shows this set, but still no DRI. I still get the AGP error message given above.

I've enabled textured video as this normally disables DRI, just to see what happens. It does explicitly disable DRI, but when removed DRI remains disabled.

It has occured to me that this may be a Hardware problem. Has the 2.6.16 kernel series changed resource allocation for video cards? I have only 8Mb of memory on board the card, and run the 2D stuff in 16bit mode in order to have enough memory left to allocate to 3D textures, etc. This was a problem when setting up DRI, running in 32 bit mode would disable DRI as this took up too much of the cards memory to enable any 3d DRI. If 2.6.16 has increased the resource usage at 16 bit colour it might have left me with too little resources to enable DRI. What are your thoughts?

Thanks

looks like the new AGPGart interface has had me fooled,- I haven't been compiling the extension for my intel chipset, a 440ZX (Though supposingly only 440lx and gx are supported...) into my kernel. This came up during A closer inspection of menuconfig when recompiling for .16-r9, and appears to have resolved the problem. Sorry for wasting anyones time.
