It looks like some packages link against libgpm without depending on gpm. It breaks badly at least the following scenario: 1. user removes all packages depending on gpm 2. user does emerge --depclean and removes gpm 3. some packages stop working 4. no-very-happy user does revdep-rebuild and it fails with: ld: libgpm not found on some random package. (This is because some *-config or *.la files tell auto* tools to link against -lgpm. Credit for reminding me that this could be the cause goest to genone@IRC.) 5. even-more-unhappy-user is confused... I detected misbehaving packages with: for a in `grep -rl -- '-lgpm' /usr/bin /usr/lib /usr/kde/3.5/lib`; do echo -n "$a "; epm -qf $a; done and here is the list (possibly not all these packages misbehave): - libggi - libsdl - sdl-mixer Remerging these allowed revdep-rebuild to successfully do it's job. Could anyone fix this problem? Maybe something could be done to autodetect such problems in the future? that's how libtool works one sublibrary correctly links against libgpm and everything that links against that library suddenly links against libgpm
