Description Klaus-J. Wolf 2003-01-06 07:27:05 UTC
I am familiar with the discussion "[gentoo-user] LaTeX problem" and the
reply by Martin Schlemmer of 29 Jan 2002 20:35:17.
Anyway, my experiments with Gentoo 1.4rc2 have ended in a TeX
installation (tetex-1.0.7-r11) that won't work:

---snip---

kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode ljfour --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi

mktexpk: Mismatched mode ljfour and resolution 600; ignoring mode.
mktexpk: Running mf \mode:=ljfour; mag:=1+0/600; nonstopmode; input ecrm1200
This is METAFONT, Version 2.7182 (Web2C 7.3.1)
I can't find the base file `mf.base'!

Doing what M.S. proposed (as I understand it) didn't work:

---snip---
golulu root # inimf mf
This is METAFONT, Version 2.7182 (Web2C 7.3.1) (INIMF)
(/usr/share/texmf/metafont/config/mf.mf
(/usr/share/texmf/metafont/config/mf.ini
(/usr/share/texmf/metafont/base/plain.mf
! Extra tokens will be flushed.
<to be read again>
                   string
l.4 string
           base_name, base_version; base_name="plain"; base_version="2.71";
 >> base_name
 >> "plain"
! Equation cannot be performed (numeric=string).
---snap---

(That error meesages continue, but the main problem seems to be that the
first word "string" is not being recognized.)

Does mf.base get generated following this? I get the same output, but it does
create mf.base...
Comment 2 Klaus-J. Wolf 2003-01-07 19:02:55 UTC
It's being generated, but I don't know what to do with it, and, if it's usable
at all.
Comment 3 Matthew Turk (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-01-07 19:04:45 UTC
Try putting it in

/var/lib/texmf/web2c/
Comment 4 Klaus-J. Wolf 2003-01-07 19:12:23 UTC
It works. 8-)
Now kick me. ;---}
Comment 5 Matthew Turk (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-01-07 19:15:55 UTC
Heh, no need. It should do that automatically, so it's not your fault... We
just have to hold out until teTeX 2.0, which should be very soon...
