experienced on hardware: ------------------------ Digital Server 7000, Phoenix BIOS 4.05 (1998-10-19), Digital BIOS extension 3.02 * Dual Pentium Pro 200 MHz, 1GB ECC RAM * Adaptec 3940UW BIOS 1.24 (tested also with Adaptec 2940UW BIOS 2.20) * Mylex DAC960P/PD BIOS 4.10-27 1998-04-14, two system disks on separate channels 1 an 2 of {0,1, 2} 1st boot-device is the SCSI-CD-ROM on Adaptec controller, no other devices on bus 2nd boot-device is system disk 1 on Mylex controller Starting with LiveCD 1.4_rc1-r2 ------------------------------- System boots but the textual display is reduced to one line only. No chance to read any output on console. Starting with LiveCD 1.4_rc2 ---------------------------- After pressing <ENTER> at boot-prompt the kernel should be loaded. Then the splash-screen diappears as exptected but the cursor is remaining at the upper left corner of the screen at it's initial position, blinking. The computer freezes. No kernel seems to be extracted into memory or booted. No kernel messages appear. Nothing... There is just silence... I experienced the same with all combinations of suggested boot-prompt parameters. (noscsi, nonet, noapic, acpi=no) Do you have any idea how to overcome this problem? some hints: actual RedHat 8.0, Mandrake 9.0 fail likewise. Armin R.
try "acpi=off" rather than "acpi=no". Other than that, not sure.
Starting with LiveCD 1.4_rc2 ---------------------------- I tried "acpi=off" instead of "acpi=no" - BUT it did not help A screen-shot of the display-bug using LiveCD 1.4_rc1-r2 is shown by http://www.eec.or.at/ext_lnkd_cntt/gentoo/bugs/Live_CD/1.4/rc1-r2_display- bug_on_Digital_Server_7000.jpg Info: refreshing the screen after manipulating the environment variables that control console-width and -height did not help
Created attachment 8325 [details] Kernel boots after a "downgrade" to BIOS version 3.01 After a series of tests I found out the following - that helps: * BIOS "DOWNGRADE" TO VERSION 3.01 The server BIOS version 3.02 seems to be buggy - this could be the reason why Digital (DEC), Compaq and now HP removed the flash image from their support page!? - since the flash-utility makes no backup from the old ROM image, I tried "everything else" before I attempt to make a "downgrade" (I do not own a copy of version 3.02) * The Mylex SCSI-RAID-Controller and the Adaptec 3940 SCSI-Controller must be installed using a special combination of PCI slots so that the Mylex ROM is scanned before the Adaptec Option-ROM while the server starts up. Now the machine boots Gentoo Live CD version 1.4_rc2 and 1.4_rc1-r2 without any trouble. The problem with the display under 1.4_rc1-r2 doesn't exist any more. Hint: Under BIOS Version 3.0 Gentoo Live CD 1.2 doesn't boot, while BIOS Version 3.02 didn't make any troubles. *** Conclusion: Use BIOS Version 3.01 if you want to run Gentoo Live CDs on a Digital Server 7000 or DEC Prioris 6000 *** Armin attachment: BIOS Version 3.01 - flash-utility and ROM data disk image
fixed, also latest livecds may boot without the bios fix.
