since /lib is a symlink into mnt/iso/lib creating this directory is hard, since
most people can't work without /lib.  If the directory were present, when
booting the livecd image with an alternate kernel (but standard initial ramdisk)
the modules for the new kernel could be overmounted.

ok ic, 

I'll make lib writeable too. But we definately need a good kernel on the livecd too. If you 
were using a new kernel because the old one didn't work but the new one did, can you 
send me some machine specific info and the kernel you were using?
