The provided URL describes the backtraces of three applications that fail to load. Each of the applications gives an output simular to the following: Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'gconf-editor' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'. (Details: serial 262 error_code 1 request_code 149 minor_code 2) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) aborting... Any help or advice on proceeding to debug the issue is more than welcome!
I haven't changed anything on my setup so far, but now it would appear nvidia-settings does load, and fails immediately with the error reported earlier 'on the first arbitrary keypress'. gtk-chtheme and gconf-editor still don't even get that far.
we need your emerge info and more information. are you running unstable? stable? what version of gtk do you have? did you recently upgrade to modular X? thanks.
[ Running on ~x86 ] * x11-libs/gtk+ Installed: 1.2.10-r11 2.8.17 * x11-base/xorg-x11 Installed: 7.0-r1 * x11-base/xorg-server Installed: 1.0.2-r4 So, yes, modular X, and also have Xgl installed - however the issue occurs with both X servers. I have a suspicion that it's something to do with xorg-server. Downgrading that one is however not an option anymore since all previous versions were removed from the tree for security reasons. Funny thing is though, that now that I recompiled everything with -g, the issue seems to have been subdued apart from with nvidia-settings. I will try to get more specifics on this as soon as I have something for you - in mean while, a good debugging technique is most welcome emerge --info follows: Portage 2.1_pre10-r3 (default-linux/x86/2005.1, gcc-3.4.6, glibc-2.4-r2, 2.6.16-ck6-r1 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.16-ck6-r1 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 2.00GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.12.0_pre19 distcc 2.18.3 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.3-r1 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: [Not Present] dev-util/confcache: 0.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r2 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=pentium-m -O3 -pipe -falign-functions=32 -ftracer -g" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/eselect/compiler /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/splash /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/web2c /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium-m -O3 -pipe -falign-functions=32 -ftracer -g -fvisibility-inlines-hidden" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="" FEATURES="autoconfig collision-detect confcache distcc distlocks metadata-transfer parallel-fetch sandbox sfperms splitdebug strict userpriv usersandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo/ ftp://213.186.33.37/gentoo-distfiles/ ftp://mirror.icis.pcz.pl/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.tu-clausthal.de/pub/linux/gentoo/ http://gentoo.mirror.icd.hu/ ftp://212.219.56.131/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/ ftp://gentoo.inode.at/source/ http://gentoo.osuosl.org/" LANG="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ALL="en_US.UTF-8" LINGUAS="en_CA en_GB en en_US nl_BE nl nl_NL" MAKEOPTS="-j4" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://ftp.belnet.be/gentoo-portage/" USE="3ds X a52 aac aalib acpi alsa apm async automount avi bash-completion bitmap-fonts bzip2 cairo cdr cegui cg cjk cli clock-screen crypt cscope cups dbus devil dga dio directfb divx4linux dpms dri dvd dvdread eds effects emboss encode erandom exif fbcon ffmpeg firefox foomaticdb ftp gdbm ggi gif glitz glut gnome gnutls gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 hal hpn i8x0 imlib inkjar insecure-savers isdnlog jabber jack java javascript jpeg jpeg2k junit kde kdeenablefinal key-screen libcaca libg++ libwww linuxthreads-tls lirc lm_sensors logitech-mouse mad mbrola mikmod mmap mmx mmx2 mmxext mng motif mouse mozcalendar moznocompose moznoirc moznomail mp3 mpeg msn msnextras ncurses nethack new-login nls no_helper nptl nptlonly nsplugin offensive ogg oggvorbis openal opengl openssl oscar oss pam pam_chroot pam_console pam_timestamp pcre pdflib perl pic plugin pmu png pppd python qt qt4 quicktime readline real reflection rtc samba sblive sdl search-screen session skey socks5 spell spl sse sse2 ssl sun-jdk svg svga swat syslog tcltk tcpd tetex threads tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts unicode urandom usb userlocales vorbis win32codecs winbind x86 xcomposite xgetdefault xinerama xml xml2 xorg xrandr xv xvid yahoo zlib elibc_glibc input_devices_linux input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse input_devices_evdev kernel_linux linguas_en_CA linguas_en_GB linguas_en linguas_en_US linguas_nl_BE linguas_nl linguas_nl_NL userland_GNU video_cards_vesa video_cards_fbdev video_cards_fglrx video_cards_radeon video_cards_ati" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, INSTALL_MASK, LDFLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS

@reporter: are you still having this issue?
It's been a month, closing this bug. Don't hesitate to reopen with up-to-date information. Thanks
