This is at least the third very weird error I see with this strange SVN portage version that so many people seem to be using lately for whatever reason...
Comment 2 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2006-05-07 22:07:05 UTC
perhaps we should add something to the die message ... ive tried to track down some bugs before that were really the portage svn being the problem because i failed to note the 'Portage ####-svn' in `emerge info` output

if [[ $version == *svn* ]] ; then
  echo "!!! THIS IS A SUBVERSION VERSION OF PORTAGE, NOT A RELEASE"

It's 2.0.54-r1 (simple mistake in the release process for solar's first portage release).
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2006-05-07 22:21:19 UTC
in this case, sure ... but ive encountered users running an actual svn version of portage before

Somethings wrong with your system because that move operation failed. Can you try it with mv command to see what happens?

Actually, no, I can't do anything to modify the file in any way. I can't cp or mv another file over it. I can't mv it out of the way. I can't rm it. I can't chmod it. I can't cat to it. I can't create a hard link to it. There's nothing in dmesg or /var/log/messages (or any of the logs in /var/log).

It must be some type of issue with your filesystem and/or kernel. Maybe you can work around it with a reboot.

Yeah, that's what I figure. But it's 0300 where I am & it can wait until tomorrow night! Thanks for you help.
Comment 10 Ed Goforth 2006-05-11 21:09:22 UTC
FYI, the actual problem was that somehow the file had gotten extended attributes applied. I have no idea how this happened.

smithfield ~ # lsattr /usr/include/X11/DECkeysym.h
-u--iad-c---- DECkeysym.h

Sorry for the bother.
