I used to have the same problem. It's an issue with the Gnome-VFS file selector in Gnome 2.15 that Gnome and GTK apps can use. I noticed that Firefox 2.0b1 didn't have the issue for me, but it was broken in enough other GTK apps that I ended up downgrading to 2.14 for now, since I don't currently have the time to debug it.
