Description Marcus Becker 2006-05-02 03:28:14 UTC
while booting from the 2006.0 cd the system always hangs without error message when starting hdparm
i interrupted the bootscript at this position and the rest booted fine
then i realized, that the network module wasn't installed
looked up the right driver in the internet for smc 1211tx and it should be 8139too
when i load the module the system freezes without error message
i have the nic connected to a router with dhcp running, other machines are working fine with it
i tried several modules now and it seems 8139too is the right one, because it's the only one that do anything (unfortunatly freezing the system)
i removed the card and everything works fine during boot
it's a smc 1211tx with a mpx chip on it

please include exact kernel version. It may be necessary to attach the config /proc/config.gz or /usr/src/linux/.config.

Please, if you have the ability, test with the latest vanilla kernel to see if the problem can be replicated there.
Comment 2 Marcus Becker 2006-05-02 04:11:00 UTC
i haven't configured a kernel yet
just started an installation without network, got gcc working and now i need to download kernelsources first somewhere

the actually kernel that makes probs is the one on the livecd 2006.0 (and it's .config etc)
Comment 3 Marcus Becker 2006-05-02 13:46:22 UTC
ok, some trying later
it seems not to be the running system or the module
the board is broken or the bios is not able to use pci-network cards
it's an asus a7v333
with a new nic and rtl chip the nic has the same problem

upgraded bios to 1017 bios
when i start the system without the cable plugged in it starts up fine
it only freeze when it gets the ip-adress from the router

i am sorry to report this as a gentoo bug, but has anyone elese an idea what could cause the problem
