It was noted that gftp does not handle the charset settings very well. If you have a local and remote file system in different charset, remote file lists become unidentifiable symbols and the downloaded files do not convert to local charset correctly. Recently the author of PCMan File Manager wrote a patch to solve this issue and claimed that it works under all charset setttings theoretically.
