I emerged Kile (1.3), which included the merging of tetex 1.0.7-r11.  When I 
try to run latex or pdflatex on my .tex files, the programs complain about not 
finding .fmt files (pdflatex doesn't find pdflatex.fmt).  I searched for those 
files on my HD and they indeed aren't there.  Are they really missing in the 
package or do I need other packages? (in which case I apologize for this 
report..)

Try re-emerging tetex.  It should now generate the .fmt files properly.
