Description Eric Stockbridge 2003-01-03 10:47:50 UTC
I tried the grp livecd for the athalon and it freezes every time.
it gets to:
 PCI: Using configuration type 1
then it freezes up, have tried noapic and all the other options you get when you
hit f2

Can you please post some information about your hardware?
Comment 2 Daniel Robbins (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-01-03 22:36:31 UTC
Note: this is kernel xfs-sources-2.4.20_pre2
Comment 3 Tobias Eichert 2003-01-04 10:41:08 UTC
I'm preparing for a new xfs-sources release on Sunday. It'd be good to know your
hardware specs so I am able to track down this freezing issue.

i have a compaq presario 700US laptop

900 MHz duron/256MB ram/twister video
Comment 5 Faye Pearson 2003-01-07 09:28:42 UTC
I've seen this happen (not with gentoo bootdisk) on a Compaq Presario 2701ea when
acpi and (smp or local apic or io apic) are enabled together. I wonder if acpi=no would
solve the problem here? The user can then build the kernel without local apic/smp and
it should work
Comment 6 Tobias Eichert 2003-01-08 05:46:56 UTC
Yes, I've heard about that, too.
Eric: Wanna give it a try with ACPI disabled?

I'll talk to Lolo..maybe he knows more about that.
If ACPI really confuses several systems we should
make it optional by either building it as modules (if
that's possible) or just by setting acpi=no as the
default boot option.
Comment 7 Brandon Low (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-01-08 13:07:08 UTC
ACPI is needed for many laptops... but yes turning off ACPI on this box is
probably a good idea as a test. Also make sure that your bios is set to
non-pnp-os support when you boot w/o acpi and for pnp-os-support with botting
w/acpi.
Comment 8 Eric Stockbridge 2003-01-09 11:35:40 UTC
tried turning off acpi, I tried all the options listed on the cd. this is the
first time a Gentoo CD has failed to boot on that laptop.
Comment 9 Bob Johnson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-01-18 01:20:21 UTC
did you happen to try the commands, noapic, and apic=off also
Comment 10 Eric Stockbridge 2003-01-18 18:03:30 UTC
tried them all

I tried to used 'gentoo-basic' cd on Dell Optiplex GX240 box. I have tried all options at boot prompt. No luck.

It freezes at this point, "Uncompressing Linux . . . . Ok, booting the Kernel."

Dell Optiplex GX240 spec
------------------------
Pentium 4 1.50 GHz
256 MB RAM
RAGE 128 Pro Ultra GL AGP
Teac CD-224E
3COM 3C920 Integrated Fast Ethernet
Madge Smart 100/16/4 PCI Token-Ring
Comment 12 Jens Schittenhelm 2003-03-19 12:32:57 UTC
Same problem here for the 1.4rc3 livecd. The booting stops after the message "OK uncompressing the kernel". Gentoo 1.2, Knoppix, Mandrake and win2000 boot fine here. I tried out all possible options under F2.

My system specs:
IBM Aptiva Series
AMD K6 400mhz
512mb SDRAM
ATI Rage Pro AGP2x onboard
SAMSUNG 10gig hd on ide
DC-2469 SCSI adapter and TEAC RW attached to it
ESSOLO audio clone
ne2k-pci clone

reopen if -rc4 doesnt boot the ibm, kernel opts were not working on those boxes,
removed in latest.
