I just installed the latest version of the XFree86 package and it appears that the keybord maps installed with it are broken. At startup, I get the following error message: The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports: > Error: No Symbols named "0ã* ž" in the include file "de" > Exiting > Abandoning symbols file "default" Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
I haven't seen that error message but I have started to have keyboard wierdness recently with my "se" keyboard. basically none of the alt 2 3 4 7 8 9 0 + are working. It just gives me arg2 arg3 arg4 etc. like this (arg: 2). I have to test on a newly built machine as well. I'm running kde.
That is how I started discovering that problem. Basically, the keyboard definition is not loaded under X because the xkbdmap cannot be loaded, so you're stuck with the settings you have on the console, which come from loadkeys(1). Take a look at your logfiles; maybe you'll find the same error message I posted. I don't know whether KDE captures the output from the process somewhere ... But usually you should find that in /var/log/xdm-errors or in /var/log/XFree[somthing].{8|0}.
I've just checked my other machine which is a brand new build of 1.4rc2 and it suffering the same problem. In a linux console things are fine, it's only in X that the problem is occuring. I don't get any error messages and XFree.log looks right (**) Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" (**) XKB: rules: "xfree86" (**) Option "XkbModel" "pc105" (**) XKB: model: "pc105" (**) Option "XkbLayout" "se" (**) XKB: layout: "se" (==) Keyboard: CustomKeycode disabled
What version of xfree is this? I just upgraded to xfree-4.2.1-r2 on a SPARC system, and with a sun(5) kbd, two keycodes are effectiveby missing: My 'L/l' key is equivalent to 'B/b' and ',/<' maps onto 'v/V' Is this the same bug, or do I need to submit it for xf86/sparc?
It's the same version of XFree, so I guess it maybe the same bug. I'm not really sure though as I am using a Swedish keyboard.
Working on this. Ill add a 4.2.1-r3 in the next day or two, which I would appreciate feedback on.
I found a problem with permissions on /var/tmp. It was my fault I guess.
Can you guys remerge 4.2.1-r2. Me and Gerk think we tracked it to a patch that we dropped. Let me know if it solves this issue ...
Any feedback ?
Tony, mind to elaborate ?
/var/tmp didn't have user write permissions. I symlinked it and never realised the permissions where stuffed. It only had root write permissions. Once I changed the permissions everything was ok.
I re-installed the revised xfree package and it looks pretty good. The error message is gone now, and after compilation, etc-update walked me through a couple of changes files which obviously included keymap stuff. If I notice anything, I'll let you know, but until then, assume that the bug is fixed (at least for me). Good work!! Thanks a lot.
I reinstalled for sparc, and after my problems with compiler flags on sparc for use with xfree86 (as discussed at #14126), everything seems now to work as expected. So, keyboard mappings on sparc with a sun keyboard now seem OK. Thanks for the fix.
closing now as fixed
