Profile default-linux/x86/no-nptl/2.4/ kernel 2.4.32-gentoo-r2 alsa-driver & -tools & -utils 1.0.11 alsa-config detects sound card, modules load without error, but alsamixer reports "function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device". Files in /dev related to sound devices do not appear to have been created.

This should probably be filed under "documentation". Fixed by 1) Enabling "Experimental" in the kernel, 2) Enabling devfs and devfs load at boot, 3) Compiling the kernel with "sound card support" but no sound cards enabled, 4) Then emerging/compiling alsa-driver. (Step 3 may not be necessary, untested.) Legacy systems attempting to stay current via upgrading without reconfiguration, and/or systems where kernel configuration is poorly understood are likely to experience this problem.
