Description Dave Hope 2006-04-26 00:18:23 UTC
As per a forum topic [1] people seem to be having problems with VLC in fullscreen mode. In particular on ~amd64. There are two things which seem to happen:

 1. Window appears maximized, rather than actual full screen mode. Leaving window borders around the window.

 2. Video appears without borders, centered on the display but does not make use of the full screen size.

This may actually need a bug report upstream, not sure. I'll post a full output from my emerge --info when I get home. In the mean time, please refer to the forum topic [1].

Comment 1 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-26 00:34:18 UTC
Please, don't restrict bugs without any reason. Also, definitely not a critical bug.
Comment 2 Dave Hope 2006-04-26 02:06:09 UTC
Hi Jakob,

Not sure what you mean by restricting the bug, but I'll try not to do whatever I did next time.

As for critical, I believe it is. Most users who use VLC are going to want to watch videos in full screen. It really makes DVD playback and such suffer. Who wants a border around the screen ?
Comment 3 Patrick McLean gentoo-dev 2006-04-26 13:11:28 UTC
"Critical" status is not for asthetic issues like this, it would be critical if playing a malicious mpeg file would get your machine compromised, or if it randomly deleted files after playing them.

Restricting the bug means setting the bug so only certain people can see it (the "Gentoo Developers" and "Gentoo Security) check boxes).
Comment 4 Dave Hope 2006-04-27 00:11:00 UTC

Ah. Ok. Will remember that for next time.

Appologies for the delay in posting this.

INFO:
Using gnome-light-2.12.0 with metacity-2.12.3 The alternate fullscreen method simply removes window borders and centers the output on the display in ab 800x600 box.

Can you try with 0.8.5_beta4? Seems like an upstream bug, that might be better to report to them, maybe it can be pushed in before 0.8.5 release.

Comment 8 Dave Hope 2006-05-03 08:22:02 UTC
Hello again,

I'vbe been speaking to 'thedj' in the VLC IRC Channel. We've narrowed it down to the opengl/xvideo output. Switching to sdl seems to work fine when using the alternate fullscreen mode...

To test:
vlc --intf=dummy --vout=sdl <FILE.AVI>

If a patch is to be made, it's be made in modules/video_output/x11/ which is where the x11/xvideo/glx suff is built.
Comment 9 Joel Cunningham 2006-06-20 12:36:44 UTC
The SDL output fix almost isn't any better than watching it in non-fullscreen. It puts a big black border all the way around the video. This no fullscreen pretty much makes vlc un-usable for me.

Seriously, when is this going to be fixed? Wish I could jump in and help but I don't think I can.

The alternate fullscreen method works *but* gnome-panel stays on top, no matter what.
If I use SDL for video output, VLC just crashes.

I am wondering if this problem isn't a problem with certains Window Managers. I have been using kde-3.5.3 as my main desktop and VLC can't go fullscreen in it, but it can go fullscreen just fine in fluxbox or openbox.

Comment 12 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-21 00:36:21 UTC
From KDE you should be able to put it the right fullscreen by right mouse button on the titlebar -> advanced -> fullscreen.

Why it's messed up, I'm still unable to say :/
Comment 13 Joel Cunningham 2006-07-21 11:58:04 UTC
Actually using the KDE fullscreen method mentioned above, did put VLC into fullscreen, but using that the fullscreen feature crashed kwin and kicker. But that would be a KDE problem, not VLC.
Comment 14 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-11-30 18:42:01 UTC
Please give a try to 0.8.6_rc1 and if it's still an issue report upstream.
Comment 15 Joel Cunningham 2006-12-01 08:45:37 UTC
I just emerged 0.8.6_rc1 and it still doesn't fullscreen. I am convinced that this is a KDE problem and not VLC. kwin is the only window manager that I have tried that it won't fullscreen with. Works just fine with fluxbox, openbox, and beryl. I haven't tried it with metacity, so you gnome users might want to test it.
Comment 16 Joel Cunningham 2007-01-12 05:35:02 UTC
Posted a bug report over in the KDE stomping ground...hope this gets solved soon.

KDE People don't feel responsible,
VLC People gave up, because no one of them has an AMD64 System.
So it is not looking good.

0.9.0-svn doesn't work as well.
Comment 18 Alexis Ballier gentoo-dev 2007-03-11 17:05:19 UTC
upstream fixed this one, I tested it and it's fine, I was worried with that fullscreen mode not working ;)

commited in gentoo's ~arch vlc
Comment 19 Lubos Dolezel 2007-03-29 16:39:33 UTC
It is still kind of screwed up. The fullscreen window appears on the wrong display, I can't make it run on the second Xinerama display.

Previously, I could move the window to where it is supposed to be and make it go fullscreen by hand.

I am the one who started the forum thread linked in this bug's description 2½ years ago. The problem is _not_ fixed for me in vlc-9.0_beta1 (currently marked as ~amd64 in portage). In fact the situation is even worse than in 0.8.6g (currently stable for amd64).

In 0.8.6g I can at least use "vlc --intf=dummy --vout=sdl <video file>" as per comment #8 to get it _almost_ to work (the "black borders" problem still applies so it's not really useful but atleast it's _something_). With 0.9_beta1 I mainly get segfaults; one combination actually made the video output appear during fullscreen, albeit with its original resolution (i.e. as big as shoed in the embedded player) in the left, upper corner with the rest blacked out. In other words, things are just like they were 2½ years ago.

IMHO, this bug should be reopened.

Here's my active USE-flags for vlc: X a52 alsa dvd hal matroska mp3 mpeg ncurses ogg opengl png sdl stream truetype vcd vorbis wxwindows xinerama xml xv

And here's emerge --info:
