net-setup eth0 fails because 8139too module is not loaded. If I modprobe 8139too before running net-setup, all go fine. Keep on your good job.

I have the same card and experienced the same thing
It stops searching for the right driver at a certain point
It gives an error message that there was a problem with a file
It continues boot without 8139too support because it never gets to it
I had to boot with the 1.4_rc1 cd to find out which one I should be using

latest experimentals have better detection

try a newer livecd now
