Description uran238 2006-04-23 02:16:40 UTC
Hi,
in the nVidia guide the kernel and glx version 1.0.6629 is said to be the latest to support tnt* and <=geforce2 cards. As you can read here ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-7174/README.txt (search for tnt2) this is not true anymore.
I didn't manage to get the modular Xorg to work with the old drivers (nvidia_drv.o is unresolved) so it better get's changed.

Furthermore I dont't think it's a good idea to mask all newer nvidia packages, as done in the guide. e.g.
echo ">media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r5" >> /etc/portage/package.mask
will also mask new revisions of that version e.g. -r6 so I recommend

# echo ">media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.7175" >> /etc/portage/package.mask
# echo ">media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.7175" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

for the future. The version 7175 doesn't exist and probably will never exist, but new revisions of the old version won't get masked.

AFAIK 7174 simply doesn't work with those legacy cards.

Correct. Also, the guide refers only to stable drivers, so unless something from the 8xxx line is made stable for all arches, the existing mask is prudent; we don't want unstable packages if we can avoid them. That being said, if there is a new driver release that supports the older cards, then we can update the mask as necessary.

7174 is the latest legacy driver. I can confirm that it works on my Geforce 256 DDR card and it should work on TNT cards as well:

Yes it does work with TNT cards! I thought this was settled on a previous bug
report that dealt with the ioctl32 error was getting with 7174 and nvidia wrote
a patch. The patch NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-7174-1296092.diff fixed the problem and
works with TNT cards. Confirmed it on two different boxes with two different
TNT's. One of them is still running 7174 with a TNT card.

Now the legacy drivers have been folded out into their own package, nvidia-legacy-drivers.

Interesting development. What version gets installed with this package?

Found this info on their website.

With nvidia-legacy-drivers available, I am resoling this bug.

I'm also "resolving" the bug. :-)
