Description Patrick Guimond 2006-04-19 05:41:27 UTC
The current fontconfig default for fonts is `Bitstream Vera'. This font set isn't developped anymore but forks of the project are currently improving and adding support for more languages.

The `DejaVu' project development seems to be quite active and provides support for more languages than the base Bitstream Vera fonts. This is a proposal for making DejaVu the default font set in Gentoo Linux.

No.

This is not a duplicate of 129117, reopening.
Please consider making fontconfig default to DeJavu when both that and bitstream-vera are available by changing the order in 60-latin.conf conf.avail file.
This has nothing whatsoever to do with what font package is being pulled in by xorg-x11, and everything to do with a sane default when both are installed - with or without them being pulled in, as the user should get a better default no matter if they were pulled in by something, or if he/she emerged both him/herself.

Might also want to consider enabling 57-dejavu.conf by default, not sure (I haven't done so yet)
Comment 4 Mart Raudsepp gentoo-dev 2008-09-11 12:34:40 UTC
Upstream bug exists for the consideration of order adjustment, adding to URL field.

I guess this is up to the fonts team.

At least for me, I see much better fonts in http://bugzilla.gnome.org/ with 57-dejavu.conf enabled than disabled (I am using media-fonts/dejavu-2.21)

Any new here? I am using dejavu since months (with 57-dejavu.conf enabled) in four machines without any problems. I have bitstream-vera uninstalled (I am using package.provided until bug 129117 is fixed) and all work ok (or, in some websites, I now get better fonts than before with bitstream). Also, distributions like fedora or mandriva are defaulting to dejavu since a lot of time without problems.

Thanks a lot

Made media-fonts/liberation-fonts the default in fontconfig-2.11.93.

I'm not saying they're ugly, but this seems rather sudden, and I'd like to know why.

It's not all that sudden. It's the official recommendation of the new fonts team, and they have the same metrics (and are therefore good replacements of) the ubiquitous Times/Arial/Courier font families.
