Description Moshe Kamensky 2006-04-15 08:19:46 UTC
After upgrading to x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.99.2, some of the text in
various X applications disappear. Examples are in window manager menus
(tried fluxbox and KDE), firefox, gvim (with gtk2 gui) and conky.
Terminals (xterm and mlterm) work fine. In firefox, the text sometimes
reappear after moving the cursor or highlighting the text.

Downgrading to xorg-server-1.0.2-r3 solved the problem.

Comment 2 Stu Black 2006-04-15 18:54:28 UTC
I also have this problem. It looks like both of those above me use the nVidia driver, which I also use. If I use the nv driver, the problem disappears. Downgrading xorg-server also fixes the issue.

According to http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=65564 , this is a problem with nVidia's custom driver and changes in the newer xorg-server. It seems that the onus is on nVidia to make the necessary changes.

Comment 3 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-16 00:44:37 UTC
The driver-server ABI broke from 1.0 to 1.0.99/1.1, so any driver that works with 1.0 will be broken in numerous ways with 1.1. Please test with a driver designed to work with 1.1.
Comment 4 Declan Ireland 2006-04-16 03:22:37 UTC
Recompiled nvidia drivers no good
Switch to nv driver & works now.
Guess i use nv driver till nvidia updaates theres to new abi
Comment 5 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-16 10:50:38 UTC
You can't recompile the nvidia driver, it's distributed in binary form. You can just recompile the kernel module.
Comment 6 Renato Caldas 2006-04-17 03:04:29 UTC
Has a bug report been filed to nvidia? I guess they should know that there's a problem..

PS:I'm also using nvidia and having the same problem..
Comment 7 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-17 09:13:55 UTC
They are well aware of the problem.
Comment 8 Renato Caldas 2006-04-17 14:59:09 UTC
Well, the solution then is to (ab)use their support resources in a way that forces them to actualy do something :)

I've already sent them a message asking for support for xorg 1.1 or to release the sources.. If everyone does the same, they will eventually either shutdown the support area or actualy solve the problem..

PS: I hope they don't get offended by seing this.. I've sent them the link to this bug report..
Comment 9 James Wells 2006-04-19 21:41:57 UTC
Just wanted to add that this issue also appears to affect i855GM and i865GM video cards. Both of these cards use the i915/i810 drivers.

I'm using i855GM without an issue. What platform are you on, and what version of server, mesa, driver and kernel?

By the way, are the proprietary ATI drivers working ok? Is the problem only with nvidia?

By the way, I got an answer from their linux support. They say that the problem will be probably solved in the 1.0.9x branch of their drivers. They didn't give me any date though..

I believe ATI drivers are also not functioning properly. The ATI open source drivers are in much better shape, but that's no help to those with newer cards.
