Description Gabe 2006-04-13 21:41:40 UTC
quick system specs are: emachines m6805, Athlon64 1.8Ghz, 512ram, mobility radeon 9600 64mb

kernel panic happens most of the time when apps/games i run switch video modes, although sometimes it just switches from windowed to fullscreen fine, even a few times sometimes, but most of the time as soon as i switch to fs it crashes...

i know my DRI works ok, as my opengl screensavers in X/KDE work great and fast..
also, i have vesa framebuffer (no others) in kernel for hires console support.

what's weird about this is i can play armagetron-advanced perfectly fine.. which is opengl accelerated, it works great, including switching to and from fullscreen and windowed in any of the available video modes, any number of times;

but when it comes to quake3, for example, i can SOMETIMES (if lucky) see the starting video and menus, and then as soon as i click something, it crashes... and most of the time it just crashes on startup...

as for lincity-ng, it first crashed when i made it windowed the first time.. then i rebooted, tried again.. i was able to switch from full to win a couple times, then when i quit the game from fullscreen to desktop it kernel panicked again.

last but not least, zsnes runs fine in a window, and most of the time when i try to fullscreen it, it kpanicks... other times i might be able to get into fullscreen mode, but then as soon as the app exits it's back to crashing.

also, i wanted to mention that i can switch from and to console and X back and forth with no problems (video garbling for a second each time, but i think that's normal with ati drivers, it does something similar on my winxp box sometimes with a radeon.

that should be about it for details i can think of.. i haven't found anything relevant in /var/messages or /var/Xorg.0.log or whatever.

i hope you can find something out. thanks so much for your help, and keep up the amazing work, gentoo rules.

=)

This involves an old version of ati-drivers and is probably an upstream issue if it is still there at all. Consider using http://ati.cchtml.com/ instead, unless you think this can be fixed in the ebuild. In that case please reopen.
