There are still monocrhome monitors used out there (still useful for dual-head setups) and there are people using Linux with speech software which does not convey the (almost always irrelivant) color of the text being read. portage already provides a way to disable color :P if you read `man make.conf` you'll find the variable 'NOCOLOR'
