Description Xake 2006-04-12 10:27:06 UTC
Something that irritates me a little is that if you want to download any fortune-mod-* from portage there is no way of telling what language they are in from the description. Ok, one has it stated but most do not.

Becouse of that I suggest that the fortune-mod-* packages should in their descritions have its main language(s), prefferably in order of amount.

For example: If you have a fortune-mod-quotes where 50% of the quotes are in English, 25% are in Swedish, 20% Danish and 5% Nowegian:

Descriptions: A pack of quotes (English, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian)
or at least (English, Swedish) or (English, Scandinavian) or something similar so you at least have a little knowledge about if you are going to understand the quotes or not...

Right, so we'll be reading all the fortunes and ponder which language each of them is. Yay! :P

Well you do not have to read ALL of them, just enought to be able to tell more than just "some quotes by random-guy" and if you don't know who that random-guy is it is really hard to know if he maybe spoked Chinese or Russian most of the time, to me both those languages look alot like greek...:-P

OK, how about: you do it and tell us when ready? :=)

I'd also like to be able to distinguish the language of a fortune package.

More specifically, I'd like fortune-mod-all to only depend on fortune packages in languages I can read.

The fortune-mod-all ebuild already does this for some packages, in the RDEPEND variable:
 linguas_sk? ( games-misc/fortune-mod-debilneho )
 [...]
 linguas_it? ( games-misc/fortune-mod-it )

but not for others; I know for example that these aren't in English (I believe they're all in German):
fortune-mod-thomas-ogrisegg-20030120  0 kB
fortune-mod-norbert-tretkowski-20030120  0 kB
fortune-mod-fvl-20030120  0 kB
fortune-mod-at-linux-20030120  0 kB
fortune-mod-martin-piskernig-20030120  0 kB

Should I just add "linguas_de?" in front of them, and then maybe this I saw in the Openoffice.org ebuild:
LANGS="en sk it de"
for X in ${LANGS} ; do
        IUSE="${IUSE} linguas_${X}"
done

or is there another (better) solution?

fortune-mod-all ebuild changed to use LINGUAS to select non-English packages

I noticed the description of fortune-mod-all says "Meta package for all fortune-mod packages, with exception of fortune-mod packages for specific non-english languages" so maybe they should just be stripped from the RDEPEND?

If not, maybe the description should be changed. I shortened to "Meta package for all fortune-mod packages." in the attached ebuild. It works for me in only merging the English fortune packages plus the ones selected with LINGUAS.

If users want languages other than what they want for most packages (what LINGUAS is set to in make.conf), they can add that as a use flag to /etc/portage/package.use ("games-misc/fortune-mod-all linguas_it" for instance).
