A small dialog box came up the first time I ran rhythmbox stating that all bug reports should go to bugs.gentoo.org so here it is. Rhythmbox works great on my system at work with OSS. On my identical system at home with Alsa it dies horribly with these messages: building level ** (rhythmbox:12697): WARNING **: osssink: unable to open the sound device (in use ?) ** (rhythmbox:18816): WARNING **: osssink: unable to open the sound device (in use ?) ** (rhythmbox:25685): WARNING **: osssink: unable to open the sound device (in use ?) ** (rhythmbox:6325): WARNING **: osssink: unable to open the sound device (in use ?) building level building level Also worth nothing is that Alsa OSS emu is working fine as I can use XMMS with ESD, OSS, or Alsa plugin, and in addition killing esd doesn't help matters either. My sound (if it matters) is a crystal media PCI, cmpci.o (oss) and snd-cmipci.o. I have a strong suspicion that if I used the authentic OSS module for my sound card it would work but that's not really what I want ;-)
Uhm. Yeah.. Sorry. Chair/keyboard interface. Apparently XMMS being open causes the sound system to be used (even though every other program on earth has no problems accessing it).
