OpenAFS latest stable release is 1.2.8, portage tree is at 1.2.6
If you remove sandbox from make.globals (no, setting it in FEATURES in the environment or in the ebuild doesn't help) and just bump the version number it works straight off.
Created attachment 7762 [details] An ebuild for openafs-1.2.8 This is the ebuild I used that seams to work (It compiled nicely any way :) ). It is just a copy of openafs-1.2.6-r1.ebuild it even use the same patch.

Digest is missing from the tree
While running upgrade: --- /etc/init.d/ >>> /etc/init.d/._cfg0000_afs --- /etc/env.d/ >>> /etc/env.d/01openafs !!! Cannot write to '/afs'. !!! Please check permissions and directories for broken symlinks. !!! You may start the merge process again by using ebuild: !!! ebuild /usr/portage/net-fs/openafs/openafs-1.2.8.ebuild merge !!! And finish by running this: env-update *** Uhm, no, /afs already exists and IS MOUNTED. Change "dodir /afs" to something better and try again
