xdm works fine but gdm doesn't start. I created:

/etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/xfce42.desktop

containing:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Xfce 4.2 Session
Comment=Use this session to run Xfce 4.2 as your desktop environment
Exec=/usr/local/bin/startxfce4
Icon=/usr/local/share/pixmaps/xfce4_xicon1.png
Type=Application

Thats the wrong location for .desktops, also it looks for xfce in /usr/local ?

This is not a support forum, what is the bug here ?

I asked the general Gentoo mailing list about this and no one was able to help. When that happens I assume it's a bug and I file it here. I followed the instructions here:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xfce4

which include the specified .desktop location and /usr/local path. Let me know if you can help.

Sorry.

Does gdm start if you don't make those modifications?
Comment 6 A. Person 2006-04-14 07:35:26 UTC
I actually needed to set DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm" in /etc/rc.conf. I was using this wiki:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xfce4

which explains how to set up xdm and gdm, but adding the above was not mentioned anywhere. I've added it now.
