can you `modprobe nvidia`?
I already rolled back to the previous nvidia-kernel, so I can't test it now without breaking my system. (I'll do it if I have to, but I think I can answer this one without doing it.) When I had the 1.0.8756-version the module did seem to load normally during the boot process. (I automatically load it using /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6). It was only when X tried to start that things didn't work out.
You are sure if yours graphic NVIDIA card was supported fram latest driver released.
Worse here - my whole system locks up with this version of nvidia!!! I have tried re-emerging everything in xorg tree just to make sure. When X starts, not only does X crash in vt7, but the whole OS is taken down (or, at least I cannot switch from vt7 and cannot kill vt7) My /var/log/Xorg.0.log stops right after loading the nvidia module! and then starts into a backtrace but it appears that total lockup occurred thereafter, because other than the indication that a backtrace was beginning, there is no backtrace in the log files. Have you been able to verify that these crashes occur with 1.0.9631 ?
The kernel dump doesn't seem nvidia related. The first X.log seems to indicate a version mismatch between the loaded modules and the installed drivers (likely due to emerging a newer version and not doing an rmmod nvidia && modprove nvidia afterwards. The second X.log I'm not sure about. What are all the text files you've collected? Are you sure it's an nvidia issue and not something else?

Another thing to consider... have you tried building the kernel with more conservative / safe choices (disabling preemption for example).

No crash occured since 2007-03-21 with nvidia-drivers-1.0.9746 it has been running for more than 3 days now (cat /dev/urandom > /dev/null). (I didn't change anything else.) I'll try a few more days and report back if a crash happened or not.
Doesn't seem like a core kernel bug, given that you have to load nvidia-drivers to reproduce it. If the oops is reproducible on an untainted kernel, please send this back my way.
The oops is probably upstream -- I just got a new box (NVidia GeForce 6100 / nForce 430, Athlon64 X2 4200+ with a gigabyte of RAM) and I haven't found a stable 64-bit kernel yet. If you do a Google for Unable to handle kernel paging request at I think you'll find patches.
OK ... my machine is stable now, both with and without the "tainted" nVidia drivers. I have a Gigabyte S3 motherboard with DDR2 240 pin RAM DIMMs. The tech who built the machine assured me it would run fine with a single 1 GB DIMM, so that's what I got. And I didn't see anything in the motherboard manual to indicate that you'd have problems that way either -- the memory controller runs slower, but it shouldn't croak. Maybe all that magic works on Windows, but either you *do* need to have the DIMMs installed in pairs, or 1 GB wasn't enough and it was going into conniptions when it had to swap. So ... I now have a 4 GB stable box. :) For the record, though, I'm running 2.6.21, not 2.6.17-r8. And of all the things I tried with the single 1 GB DIMM, Fedora's 2.6.20 was the most stable. So I'd say: 1. If your DIMMs are paired, check to see if you have enough RAM 2. Upgrade to the latest stable kernel or even 2.6.21 3. This probably isn't an nVidia problem or even a Gentoo problem, since I could make stuff like this happen with pretty vanilla things like Fedora Core 6 and Debian Etch as well.
So the issue appears fixed then? Please re-open if this is not the case.
