Hey, since I installed xorg-x11-7.0 my thinkpad is regulary freezed (Only a hard reset helps). Sometimes just when I start gdm, kdm or xdm, sometimes after some minutes to one or two hours. It seems me that is related to the mouse driver, because it happens often when I just used the touchpad. I used some combinations of video (ati, radeon, fglrx) and mouse driver (ps2, synaptics) but I could not found a working combination. For compilation I used hardened gcc, only components which denied compilation with hardened gcc, I think: xf86-input-keyboard xf86-input-mous xf86-video-ati xf86-video-fbdev xf86-video-vesa xf86-video-vga were compiled with gcc vanilla. When I used synaptics driver the system freezes immediately, when I used ps2 mouse driver it haopens later when I used the touchpad, when I was logged in by ssh I could work several hours without problems. Now I have installed: ati-drivers-8.23.7 xorg-x11-7.0-r1 xf86-input-mouse-1.0.4 xf86-video-ati-6.5.7.3 synaptics-0.14.4-r2 I cannot find any hints in /var/log/Xorg.0.log about a reason for the problem. root@thinkpad:/root(1)# emerge --info Portage 2.1_pre7-r4 (default-linux/x86/2006.0, gcc-3.4.6-vanilla, glibc-2.4-r1, 2.6.17-rc1 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.17-rc1 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1700MHz Gentoo Base System version 1.12.0_pre16 distcc 2.18.3 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] ccache version 2.4 [disabled] dev-lang/python: 2.4.2-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r2 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/grass60/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/eselect/compiler /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/web2c /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://linux.rz.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/download/gentoo-mirror http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.caliu.info/pub/gentoo/ http://ftp.caliu.info/pub/gentoo/ ftp://vlaai.snt.ipv6.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/gentoo/ http://www.gigaload.org/gentoo.org/" LINGUAS="de fr" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X Xaw3d a52 aac acpi alsa amrr ao aotuv apache2 arts asf atlas auctex audiofile automount avi berkdb bitmap-fonts blas bonobo bzip2 cairo cardbus cdda cddb cdf cdio cdparanoia cdr cgi cli corba crypt ctype cups curl daap dba dbus devmap dga dlloader dri dvb dvd dvi dxr3 dynagraph eds effects elf emacs emboss encode epiphany esd evo evolution exif expat fam fame fastbuild ffmpeg fftw fits flac fltk foomaticdb force-cgi-redirect fortran fpx ftp gd gdal gdbm geos gif gimp ginac glade gml gmp gnome gnuplot gphoto2 gpm graphviz grass gs gsl gsm gstreamer gtk gtk2 guile hal hardened hddtemp hdf hdf5 hlapi icq id3 imagemagick imlib innodb ipv6 isdnlog jabber jbig john jp2 jpeg jpeg2k kde kexi lame lapack latex lcms ldap libg++ libgda libsamplerate libwww lirc lzo lzw mad madwifi math matroska memlimit mikmod mmx mmxext mng mod mono motif mozcalendar mozdevelop mozilla mozsvg mozxmlterm mp3 mp4live mpeg mpeg2 mplayer musicbrainz mysql mysqli nautilus ncurses netcdf network nfs nls nntp nptl nptlonly ntfs numarray numeric ocaml octave odbc ogdi ogg opengl oss pam pcre pdf pdflib perl plotutils plugin png posix postgres pppd proj python qhull qt quicktime readline real reiserfs rhythmbox rle rrdcgi rrdtool samba sdl session simplexml slang slp sndfile snmp soap sockets sox spell spl sqlite sse sse2 ssl subtitles svg t1lib tcltk tcpd tetex theora tidy tiff tokenizer truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode v4l2 video_cards_fglrx vorbis wifi win32codecs wmf xemacs xext xine xml xml2 xmlreader xmlrpc xmms xpm xsl xv xvid xvmc zlib zvbi elibc_glibc input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse input_devices_synaptics kernel_linux linguas_de linguas_fr userland_GNU video_cards_ati video_cards_vga video_cards_vesa video_cards_fbdev" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS Any help appreciated, Juergen
I've heard that there is a problem with synaptics under it and ati driver, try to use vesa driver and see how it will works
I can confirme, that the problem disappeared after replacing the ati driver in xorg.conf by the vesa driver. At least, if I don't use the synaptics driver. In the next days I will test, if the vesa driver works together withe the synaptics dirver. Juergen
Also might be worth trying the synaptics driver compiled with vanilla specs gcc.
> ati-drivers-8.23.7 remove this buggy driver and use the opensource one xf86-media-ati.
Where can I find xf86-media-ati, it is not in portage? Do you mean xf86-video-ati? Juergen
yes, sorry for typo. Here is a 'known' bugs in the RELEASE NOTES from ATI: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/linux_8.24.8.html#178982 Running two X servers simultaneously results in the system failing to respond. Further details can be found in topic number 737-220 Toggling between console mode and X Server graphical mode may result in a system hang. Further details can be found in topic number 737-22058 A system hang may occur when attempting to resume from hibernation mode. Further details can be found in topic number 737-22059 and more in the link above. Close the bug if you are using ati-driver.
I'd like you to unmask the latest xorg-server, xf86-video-ati and xf86-input-mouse and give those a shot. Also unmask xf86-input-evdev and give that a try instead of mouse.
