Configuring Grub to use the provided splashimage (spash.xpm.gz) produces the following: - Grub menu displays a blank screen (apart from cursor flashing in top left). Pressing return or waiting for the timeout causes grub to continue booting, however: - Console fonts are now garbled and unreadable, they remain this way until the user font is loaded by the startup scripts. This problem has been noticed both on my system (using ATI Radeon 9700pro graphics) and a friend's system (ATI Radeon 9800pro). The spashimage used to work fine on a previous install of Gentoo I had on this computer. Installed version: sys-boot/grub-0.96-r2 CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -pipe"
Works just fine here on a lot of boxes, reopen with your grub.conf and relevant part of /etc/fstab.
