Hi, I had problems with the galeon-cvs ebuild, see: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=23773. So I adapated the galeon-cvs ebuild so that it will compile galeon 1.3.1 which has turned out to be pleasingly stable for me. It's attached so could someone clean it up if necessary and add it to Portage? Thanks. Caveat: proxy server support still works (my squid server is logging access attempts); it inherited the configuration fine from galeon-1.2.7. But there doesn't seem to be anything in the available dialog boxes to configure a proxy server so I suppose either (a) the dialog isn't in 1.3.1 (b) it's configured incorrectly in the ebuild. If (a) I suppose it's just a matter of editing the config files. Anyway seems very stable and doesn't even crash on the Gentoo Forums Search page like all the other versions did!

*** Bug 11015 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Compiled w/ Mozilla 1.2.1 without problems, Galeon-cvs refuse to compile for me too (different error then you get though) : gGnomeHelpUrl.cpp:109: no matching function for call to `nsIObjectInputStream:: ReadCString(nsCString&)' gGnomeHelpUrl.cpp:112: no matching function for call to `nsIObjectInputStream:: ReadCString(nsCString&)' make[2]: *** [gGnomeHelpUrl.lo] Error 1 make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/galeon-cvs-20020908/work/galeon/mozilla' make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/galeon-cvs-20020908/work/galeon' make: *** [all] Error 2 !!! ERROR: net-www/galeon-cvs-20020908 failed. !!! Function src_compile, Line 59, Exitcode 2 !!! compile failed So this 1.3.1 ebuild was a real saviour, I installed Mozilla explicitly to get Galeon2 running.
well its all beta stuff, so unless theres a correct ebuild (none of these provided come close) i have more pressing matters to attend to. For stability sake we propose building both mozilla and galeon for gtk1.
OK, well thanks for the response anyhow and I can understand your decision. The ebuild is doubtless imperfect but it does actually work and I was naturally hoping that it would be OK for inclusion as a SLOTted "~x86" ebuild or even as a fully masked one. That way, people who run it are asking for anything they may get (and I believe many people would like to run this important Gnome2 app)! <chit-chat> On the subject of the alleged stability of galeon-1.2.7 I really have to say that (very minor UI and rendering bugs in gtk2 mozilla aside) I never actually had a fatal crash in galeon-1.3.1 whereas galeon-1.2.7 crashed every now and again (and as aforementioned, every single time when using the Gentoo Forum search function!) so, although gtk1 mozilla is utterly stable (1.0.1/1.2.1 never crashed on me - ever, nor gtk2 compiled ones for that matter), I suggest that galeon-1.2.7 is not /really/ 100% stable - whatever the Galeon developers say (and I don't use crazy compiler flags). I suspect that the new branch of Galeon has a much better code base - as alluded to by the developers, but it's the level of mozilla development that's holding it back, if anything. Which is frustrating to say the least :-/ </chit-chat>
i agree, maybe galeon2 is better then galeon1, but mozilla with gtk2 is more unstable than moz with gtk1. And since moz has a larger userbase, given that its needed for several other browsers it has a higher priority. About this ebuild : deps are imo wrong and it has a lot of unnecessary cruft. I know it works for you and probably 90% of the ppl out there, but i need builds in the tree to be close to 100% watertight :) If you could fix some of the things mentioned, i might put it in.
Hmmm, OK - you've definitely encouraged me to re-examine the ebuild :-) I prepared it in about 60 seconds and didn't do anything to it after I satisfied myself that it built, which is obviously not a procedure that will produce an ebuild "par excellence"! I will certainly post another one if I get around to it -probably when mozilla 1.3 is officially released if the Galeon situation hasn't changed by then. Hopefully mozilla will have made some real progress by then on the gtk2 front (why do I get the feeling it won't have).
i had a fresh system so i desided to try galeon 1.3.2 instead of just using the normal stuff and after changing a few things in the ebuild it does compile and work pretty good
Created attachment 8968 [details] galeon-1.3.2.ebuild updated galeon 1.3x ebuild fixed depends and set it up for moz 1.3beta
ok the proxy problem? it can be set its done via gnome2 control panel control-center contains it if you want to skip the panel you can just run gnome-network-preferences and set it there (tested and verified)
i've committed a galeon-1.3.2 ebuild based on Bret's ebuild. It is currently masked because we don't think mozilla gtk2 is ready yet. But it is there if you wish to try it. thanks and closing.
