Description Danny van Dyk (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-28 12:03:33 UTC
Quoting the Kconfig:

 Enable LCT notification (I2O_LCT_NOTIFY_ON_CHANGES) [Y/n/?] (NEW) ?

Only say N here if you have a I2O controller from SUN. The SUN
firmware doesn't support LCT notification on changes. If this option
is enabled on such a controller the driver will hang up in a endless
loop. On all other controllers say Y.

If unsure, say Y.

In my opinion this warrants two kernels for SUN's amd64 based boxes.
Chris, Mike: What do you guys think?

Chris: Should we start a tracker bug for 2006.1 kernel config?
Comment 1 Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-28 12:31:00 UTC
KingTaco Kugelfang, what do you mean by 2 kernels?
KingTaco sun-sources and gentoo-sources?
KingTaco or do you mean 2 kernels on a livecd?
Kugelfang KingTaco: 2 kernels on a livecd
KingTaco Kugelfang, if you're thinking of the latter, I think we could go with 2 modules and/or make that option controlable via /proc
Kugelfang sorry that i wasn't clear on this
Kugelfang well? it's a bool option
KingTaco Kugelfang, we could do that too
chutzpah hm, well that wasn't hard
KingTaco but from the looks of it, it doesn't need to be on at all
Kugelfang yeah itdoesn't need to
Kugelfang until a user comes and cries: where'y my ICO_$something
Kugelfang ah, I2O
KingTaco "compile your own kernel"
Kugelfang yeah, but on livecd?
KingTaco livecd kernel need not be fast
Kugelfang right
KingTaco it's more important to support all hardware
KingTaco imo
Kugelfang ok, i'll wait for chris's input, but i tend to agree with you
Comment 2 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-29 05:27:19 UTC
Well, I say we don't enable it.

Also, there's no need for *any* tracker bugs at this time, so please don't file any. I'm currently going through all of the specs/kernel configs for all of the released arches from 2006.0 and making them more standardized. After that, we'll be putting them up in CVS for all to see, and we will be doing any coordination on changes on gentoo-releng (channel and ML) so that we all end up on the same page. This whole, $arch-foo has a package but $arch-bar does not has gotten out of hand.

The only reason a package should not be present is because it isn't stable on that architecture.

So I say we RESOLVED-WONTFIX this bad boy.

I think we're all in agreement here.
