Description Hero Wanders 2006-03-27 12:55:34 UTC
Hi!

In the 'Gentoo Linux nVidia Guide' on http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml it is said that owners of legacy cards should mask 'media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4'.
Since the 24th in March 2006 the r4 has been removed from portage because there is the r5.
You should update the docs to use the r5 instead of r4.

Greetings

Read the code sample a little more carefully. The > atom in front of >media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4 means that it masks *any* version greater than -r4. Sure, -r4 is out of Portage, but the mask still works!

So, the masking indeed works, but will mask the only legacy nVidia drivers version that works with current kernels (that is at least 2.6.15). Not much useful.

Spelling it out for nightmorph:
'>...-r4' means anything higher than -r4 is masked, ie. we *want* -r4
Now that -r4 has been replaced by -r5, we *want* -r5 which is masked.

I don't know anything about nvidia cards, their drivers and their numbering, but maybe masking '>1.0.6630' could be done.

Anyway, s/-r4/-r5/ done. Thanks for reporting (and reopening).
