Description Mike "Szii" Oxford 2006-03-25 10:54:57 UTC
The LiveCD kernel should have more drivers ... it doesn't have my Rt2500 which is a very very common chipset (Linksys uses it.)

There is no iwconfig in the LiveCD (wireless-tools package)

There are no distfiles/packages available. Once you're up, unless you have networking (see above two issues) there is no resource for getting the files you need. Previous versions had a PackagesCD .iso available. This should be continued.

Mirrors of the distfile tree out there only have the 2.4 kernels, not the newer 2.6 stuff. With the lack of a PackagesCD and a LiveCD snapshot kernel (with no iwconfig and no RT2500 driver in it) I'm basically f'd. I cannot even get the kernel from the web, as they're not available. I could pull the sources down from kernel.org and side-build, get everything up and running (network) and then redo the kernel using ebuilds....but I shouldn't have to do that.

Whomever moved everything "from The-Gentoo-Way" to "100% the LiveCD way" should be bitchslapped with a damn trout. Gentoo just went from "tools to let the user do what they want to do" ... to ... "experimental crap which locks you into certain paths with no escape." Put out the LiveCD (it's a good idea) but put it out in parallel with the traditional way so you don't jack over the users who don't fit your ideal profile.

The driver wasn't keyworded stable for any arch at the time of release. Our policy strictly disallows any unstable drivers/packages on release media.

Dupe of Bug 127550

Maybe you should do a better research and actually *look* at the packages available on CD.

Eh? kernel 2.6 has been the default since 2000.5, what are you talking about??? You can install livecd-sources-2.6.15 directly from the livecd.

See above.

If you dislike the livecd, don't use it. There minimal CD available, you can also install Gentoo using any linux boot cd or existing linux install and choose such media that will support whatever weird wifi card you happen to have.

Bugzilla is not a place for your bitching, sorry. Closing INVALID, this is not a bug.

Eh, 2005.0 obviously... whatever.
