Description Alex 2006-03-25 08:42:00 UTC
At least gnome-games-2.14 has zeroconf capability. I saw it during the compile (the end configuration which lists what is being used). Gnome-games doesn't have a zeroconf use flag to enable it.
Comment 1 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-27 03:58:49 UTC
because it requires howl i guess and gnomevfs has an optional dep on avahi and those services clash.

Possible option is to dep on avahi with howl-compat enabled, not sure if it works ?
Comment 2 Alex 2006-03-27 11:59:36 UTC
Not sure either. I didn't know about that whole howl thing, AllanonJL told me to report it.
Comment 3 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-27 12:56:14 UTC
well

howl? ( x )
avahi? ( avahi )

and then check if avahi is built with howl-compat should do the trick I guess. Also would deal with the case where people want to keep using howl with gnome (illogical, but who knows).

Or this could need a virtual/zeroconf or something, but since implementations are blocking and not all apps work with all libs it could prove to be messy.
Comment 4 Joe McCann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-27 13:04:44 UTC
Comment 2 is right. The services do crash which is why the flag was pulled from gnome-games. Everything was supposed to switch over to avahi for gnome-2.14 but gnome-games didn't quite get finished upstream. I haven't tested, but using howl-compat should work. You would probably have to patch gnome-games to use the howl-compat pkg-config file instead of looking for the howl version. I don't think its possible to do a virtual at this time since as foser says, there are blockers and most applications usually just support one or two zeroconf libraries.

sorry, s/crash/clash
Comment 6 John N. Laliberte (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-04-20 16:50:14 UTC
i'm closing this as WONTFIX for now unless a user specifically requests it.

we should just wait for proper avahi support since nothing else in 2.14 requires howl. ( iirc )
