When I use 'X -config xorg.conf.new' the entire machine locks up... ssh/nfs/everything locks up...  I'm open to suggestions on how to help...

Could you mount whatever partition /var is on with mount -o remount,sync and try again? It might get a more complete log.

This is an upstream bug. Regardless of whether you get more info out of the sync'd log, please file it at bugs.freedesktop.org in the xorg product. Then, post the URL here so we can track it. Thanks!

It appears to be a linux kernel 2.6 issue, as with 2.4. it works fine.
