Description Olliver Schinagl 2006-03-23 09:00:44 UTC
I was just wondering why /opt is used for binary games, when for all other games /*/games is generally used.

Especially when having lots of binary games /opt/games would make things easier to manage.

I know one can override the default in make.conf. I'm thinking that /opt/games would be a more sane default.

Nope. We like /opt as all other binary package sinstall directly to /opt and it is the "standard" for how to install things into /opt across multiple distributions (and platforms, really).

So what's wrong about being inovative and simple 'smarter' then the others?
Comment 3 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-24 07:27:37 UTC
Well, because it is entirely your opinion that it is "better" in any way. I disagree and think it is pointless considering we provide a very simple way for you to make any modifications yourself. As I said, the bug is WONTFIX because I won't "fix" it because I don't think it is broken. You're welcome to have a differing opinion just as I am welcome to not support it.
Comment 4 Olliver Schinagl 2006-03-24 09:57:35 UTC
I'm not saying it's broken, but what's wrong about thinking about new and maybe better ways of doing things? No reason to get all hostile about it.

I'm sure a good chat about why it would or wouldn't be better isn't ever gonna hurt noone.
Comment 5 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-24 11:50:34 UTC
I wasn't being hostile, I was being concise.

The simple fact of the matter is that the games team likes it how it is currently, so there's little reason to discuss alternatives as we feel that we have already done the work to provide the user with the ability to customize game installs via portage to their liking, which is something that is not done by *any* other team in Gentoo, I might add.
