Description Davor Cubranic 2006-03-22 23:23:26 UTC
LiveCD install fails because poppler-0.4.3-utils.patch.gz was not found on any of the mirrors. Install log, output (tail), and profile are attached.

Do not use the provided sync-tarball without GRP

it simply does not work. If you want to emerge from the internet run emerge sync prior to doing so.

Are you saying that if the option "Dynamic" is selected in GLI page "Stage", then the option for GRP should automatically be selected as well? If so, it sounds to me like a GLI bug because it's not obvious neither from the UI nor from the help screen for that page of the installer.

This statement is not correct. You can use the provided portage snapshot on the livecd just fine for a normal stage3 install.
It becomes outdated when you add extra packages that have files no-longer available on the mirrors. If you want to add extra packages than you have network access and shouldn't be using the portage snapshot on the livecd anyways since it is, in fact, not current.
There is no bug in the installer here. If you choose Dynamic, you just need to know what you're asking for. It is meant for networkless installations.

I disagree- the intstaller refers to it as a faster means of installing- if you're trying to get the base system up as quickly as possible, this option makes sense.

I absolutely disagree 100% that any reasonable behavior performed in the installer that results in a failed install should be allowed. You need to think long and hard about that decision because it's going to bite us in the ass sooner or later.

Either fix the issue by requiring an emerge sync whem moving to the second round of packages, or do not allow them to be installed when the dynamic option is chosen- don't pretend it's not an issue. It's misleading to allow that option and results in a lot of anger when the system fails after 3 hours of waiting.
Comment 11 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-18 16:21:23 UTC
First, this is *not* strictly an installer issue. If you did a "manual" install, used the provided snapshot, and tried to emerge poppler, you would get the *exact* same results.

Second, if we prevent the user from doing anything that would result in a failed install, the installer would be *far* less flexible. Hell, we probably wouldn't even let you compile, because that could fail!
Comment 12 Jesse Morgan (morgajel) 2006-05-18 17:08:26 UTC
then why not sync before emerging the second wave of packages?the user is already trying to connect to the internet; it's not like it's gonna change much.

if you still insist that this is a networkless install, then it shouldn't be allowed to install packages that aren't on the CD or a grp cd or whatever.
