Description Cristiano Chiucchiolo 2006-03-22 04:02:36 UTC
I have compiled the new gentoo-sources-2.6.16, but now when I boot the system I get only a blank screen. To configure the kernel I used make oldconfig; the earlier 2.6.15-r7 works perfectly.

At least attach the kernel .config (don't paste!) and describe when exactly you get blank screen, we can't solve bugs like "oh, my car just won't go"...

Comment 4 Cristiano Chiucchiolo 2006-03-22 13:31:58 UTC
The blank screen appears just after selecting the boot option from grub. No error message appears.
Comment 5 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-22 16:04:14 UTC
Are you able to get any indication of whether the system continues with a blank display, or whether the entire thing freezes?

If the system continues with no display, you might see the hard disk light flashing as the system loads, and stuff like that.

Do you have enough time(/patience!) to help investigate by booting a range of test kernels? I detailed a very useful (but time-consuming) debugging process at http://www.reactivated.net/weblog/archives/2006/01/using-git-bisect-to-find-buggy-kernel-patches/

Even if you could just get (say) 5 steps into that it would be useful. It also doesn't need to be done all in one go. The problem is that debugging problems like this is very difficult since there is no indication of who's code is the last being executed. Let me know what you can do...
Comment 6 Cristiano Chiucchiolo 2006-03-22 21:59:12 UTC
Yeah, the system continues, but with no display. I'll try the test process and then I'll let you know.

Thanks.
Comment 7 Cristiano Chiucchiolo 2006-03-23 06:58:27 UTC
The process is useless in my case because the original 2.6.15 kernel release found on kernel.org actually gives me the same problem, while the gentoo r7 patched version works perfectly (r3 and r5 worked, too).

Is there a way to do the test using the gentoo kernel as comparative?
Comment 8 Cristiano Chiucchiolo 2006-03-25 23:42:22 UTC
Sorry, there's nothing wrong with the kernel, it seems to be a grub framebuffer issue, since the problem disappeared after removing the vga=0x318 command in grub.conf
