Description Priit Laes (IRC: plaes) 2006-03-20 01:56:56 UTC
The rICMP tool is a Linux kernel patch that interacts with the TCP/IP stack.
The patch let you reboot your (probably hanged) machine remotely, using a simple ICMP Echo packet (also known as ping :)).

It requires a kernel patch and userland utility to send out the packet.

Hmmm, patching kernel for such functionality should be really requested upstream. Sounds also kinda insecure, it contains a hardcoded temporary password, according to README...
Comment 2 Priit Laes (IRC: plaes) 2006-03-20 04:07:42 UTC
Maybe only userland utils then.
Comment 3 John Mylchreest (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-20 04:56:03 UTC
Is suspect if this functionality is important for many people, they will be buying iLO and such :)

Unless this patch can be cleaned up and pushed mainstream, I cant see kernel inclusion at this time. Sorry.
RE: Userland tools, if there is someone willing to support them - I've got no personal objection to them going in. Without the kernel patch it might be questionable re: its usefulness however.

Sorry, this isn't the kind of patch we include. For more info, see http://dev.gentoo.org/~dsd/genpatches/about.htm
