Can you give a little more information around why that much disk space is needed? It's more than we have on toucan.g.o right now.

Posting per Mike's request:
Seems that I lack the foo to add a comment to this bug in bugzilla so
I'm sending via email. Perhaps someone could post this in the bug.

I chose the 250G drives because they seem to be the best value per
dollar. We could go with 200G drive at a saving of $9.50/drive. We
could go with 3 drives in a raid 5 if needed. Also consider the fact
that pitr users use chroots, so it's not an easy comparison to make with
toucan.

I chose sata-II over sata-I because it was the cheapest sata PCI-X
controller I could find and the sata-II drives were $1 more than the
same model with a sata-I interface.

If you look at the stats in cacti[1], you'll see that the trend in disc
usage is about 9GB a month. If usage continues to grow at the same rate,
then adding 750GB will give us at least 5 years until we need to add
more space.

Comment 4 Kurt Lieber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-17 13:09:04 UTC
Still seems like too much disk. That might give you enough space for 5 years worth of growth, but do you really expect the box itself to be in use 5 years from now?

Going off of experience w/ toucan, I'm also willing to bet that there's a lot of cruft in the current drives that could be cleared up and kept clean. 250GB is a lot of storage space and, in a raid 1, would provide redundancy at half the cost (or less, if we can go w/ a cheaper controller) of the proposed solution.

I would rather buy what is needed now vs. what we think we'll need in 5 years. Disk space continues to get cheaper and I would rather buy more disk 1-2 years from now than invest all the money now.
Comment 5 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-18 03:53:07 UTC
Five year is a lot for the IT industry. I would focus on a 3-year advance. I don't think we should just focus on "current requirements"; being a bit foreseeing is a good thing imo.
Comment 6 Kurt Lieber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-13 18:01:21 UTC
so if the request is for the hardware as described w/ two drives instead of 4, then I'm fine with it.
Comment 7 Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-14 07:34:29 UTC
2 disks in a raid 1 will allow for 2-3 years of growth until we hit this spot again. I suppose I'm good with this.
Comment 8 Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-01 13:13:59 UTC
what's the next step here? we need to get those disks in pitr to free up a disk for solars tinderbox.
Comment 9 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-01 14:01:35 UTC
I think we (trustees) need to officially approve this and put the order through. Grant, you're the money man, I believe.
Comment 10 Lance Albertson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-01 14:22:54 UTC
I'm with Kurt, so as long as we go with the revised request, I approve.
Comment 11 Lars Weiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-03 09:16:18 UTC
As per solar's mail, I still have to vote. I'm okay with the current situation of 2 disks.
Comment 12 Joshua Kinard gentoo-dev 2006-06-03 10:27:23 UTC
No problem here w/ 2 disks. +1

Lacking any solid records, I have estimated this expense at $485USD, taking place on 2006/06/21 (FY2006). This excludes any shipping costs, or other discounts.
