When a new message comes in to Kopete it pops a message box up "from" the taskbar icon letting the user know a new message has come in. When I click that notification it crashes my X server. I am using the transparancy and drop shadows kde provides (KDE 3.4.3 & Xorg 6.8.2-r6). I am not using any plugins (that were not in the default config). Steps to reproduce. 1. Get a taskbar notification from Kopete. 2. Click it or the taskbar icon. 3. X server crashes. Reproducable: Always
Composite is experimental software, if that's what you're using, this problem is more likely to be relied to X11 (and then relied on "don't use experimental software"). I remember such crashes but only when using nvidia's proprietary driver (ati's opensource driver on PPC had no problem at all).
It'd be nice to know if this is still a problem on X 7.0, when you get around to upgrading to it. It wouldn't surprise me if composite is at fault - as Diego said, it's quite experimental in 6.8.2.
For what I've seen here, the crash with Xorg 7 is not yet fixed, but as I said the problem seems to be with nvidia proprietary drivers, at least for me. Same Xorg version, same Kopete version in the iBook works as a charm with composite.
It happened to me once, but only when I had composite enabled. Also using the nvidia-kernel drivers here. It was enough reason not to use composite. ;)
Ah, have you tried turning off "RenderAccel" (if it's on)?
Okay considering that we don't have access to nvidia-glx sources, I think this is a CANTFIX for now.
No, it's upstream. Locations exist to file bugs with nvidia drivers.
Please file a bug at bugs.freedesktop.org in the xorg product, drivers/nvidia (proprietary) component.
