I'm using the md0 device for my / (root partition). When shutting down, it fails to shutdown Software RAID, since md0 is still in use. The system shuts down though, so it is only cosmetic.

Try baselayout-1.8.6.4.
Well, own of my discs failed, so I'm not running raid any longer, so I can't test it.
If the problem persists and anyone has more info, please reopen this bug.
I have also this issue with baselayout 1.12.11.1 mdadmin try to shutdown md3 (which is my root) and it fails because it is still in use.
same problem here on my amd64 box. just setup my first software raid. using sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.11.1. when i shutdown my system there is warning related to the root device (md2) unable to unmount. my swap (md1) and read-only /boot (md0) do not get this warning.
there is a different bug open about this. leave this ancient one alone.
