I just installed gentoo linux 1.4_rc1 from the liveCD (basic), but after rebooting, sysklogd hangs. Googled it up and found the message on http://www.elvisdieguez.us/docs/Gentoo/user-mailingList/msg02547.html Which says the guy had the same problem and fixed it by changing something in his /etc/fstab. I strictly followed the installation guidelines (for the x86). I also tried to get rid of sysklogd (for the time being) by rc-update del sysklogd. It then tells me nicely that the sysklogd has been removed from the default runlevel, but after rebooting, it again tries to start sysklogd and then hangs again. hope you can fix this.. Thanks! cc'ing azarah on this bug because we need to enable ^C interrupting of hung initscripts.
After I reported the bug, I wanted to give it one more shot and I decided to recompile the kernel (since something was missing anyway), I'm not exactly sure what I added (might have been the reiserfs support enabled instead of as a module, or the support for my ALI15x3 (or so) IDE chipset), but after that it works like a charme. So it's a kernel problem I guess, although it would be nice to have sysklogd return some info, but when I boot to runlevel 1, it also hangs when entering that runlevel. Which I think shows that it's not a typical sysklogd problem, but more of a general kernel problem. My apologies for reporting the bug too soon.
Well, guess ^C'ing sysklogd is one way to get around it, another will be to give to kernel args: init=/bin/bash rw And then rm the sysklogd symlink in /etc/runlevels/. Would be nice to know what caused it to bork in the first place ...
Someone on the forums, as well as on #gentoo, noticed that this happened (with them) while using the gentoo-sources for the kernel. When using the vanilla-kernel, none of the problems occured.
